| The 2 Step™ History: Not Just a Dance Anymore !! About 1955, Charlie Finn invented the “HydroSeeder”, as a method to apply seed, fertilizers, and later tackifiers directly to the soil. Straw was then blown over the top and crimped into the soil. This anchored the soil and buried some of the seed. Later, blankets would come on the market as the mulch. This was the original 2 Step™ ! About 1965, Hydromulch fiber came on the market as an alternative to straw and was put on using the 2 Step™ method. Horticulturally, covering the seed with soil, or at the least, having the seed in contact with the soil, and covering with mulch, has ALWAYS produced the best results. Then as the industry grew, and became more competitive, people got lazy. Even doubling the seed, and using the 1 step method, only improved the seeding results by 40%. (IECA Proceedings of March 1979, Burgess L. Kay, Agronomist at UC-Davis) But since about 1968, the 1 step method has prevailed, against all sound engineering and agriculture practices. If You Want the BEST Results: Do The 2 Step™: Step 1 - apply seed, fertilizer, and tackifier or flocculent (pam) and a Step 2 - apply mulch, and small amount of tackifier to help hold mulch Or: apply bfm, or rolled blankets over area pre-seeded Advantages: Puts all of the seed in contact with the soil (into the soil on rough surfaces) Reduces the amount of seed needed and seed costs Improves seed germination and job performance through horticulturally correct practices proven through history Puts all the tackifier or PAM on the soil, not hung up in the mulch Provides more complete protection to both seed and soil from drop impact You won’t get sued for using any tackifier or PAM you desire to use!!
Disadvantages: Labor costs may increase a little due to separate mixing (may be offset by reduced seed costs, especially expensive natives) sent e-mail via feedback if you can think of any more!! For PDF download |
